I spent the next few hours with Lykos and Nyx as they researched more and ironed out details with the staff. Strangers started showing up in professional clothing, suits, house service outfits, some with shopping bags, others with cleaning supplies. Nyx showed them where to put stuff, explained duties and expectations, and while most of them looked curious and even concerned when they saw my badly beaten state, none of them asked questions or acted too suspicious. Maybe they just assumed I was in a fight club or something. Lykos still was not finding very much, no matter how much digging he did. I was most surprised when a few men showed up, claiming to be with a furniture company, and asked Nyx where he wanted the new bed. I watched, wide eyed, as they maneuvered the massive mattress up the stairs to the master bedroom, and then came back down with the old mattress and frame.

The house was a hub of activity, putting me on edge that any of those people could slip up and turn us in to Jorak. While they remained professional, I wasn’t in the business of trusting people, but apparently, as of late, I was in the business of being a fucking clown, so who knows.

Once Nyx came back from showing the newest stranger how he wanted the kitchen organized, he sat down on the couch instead of at his computer, sighing heavily. I shifted my position on the counter, looking at him, and he grinned, patting his lap. I rolled my eyes, but I slid off the counter and went over to him, staring him down with my hands on my hips. His grin only grew, and he grabbed me by my waist, pulling me into his lap and positioning me how he wanted. My legs hung over the armrest, and he placed his arm over them, tugging me even closer against him. I scowled up at him, but he just seemed pleased with himself.

“I heard about your disagreement with Lobo this morning,” he commented, soothing my hair over my shoulder.

I rolled my eyes again. “He was overreacting. Besides, I don't take orders.” I tried to blow the whole thing off, but he just narrowed his eyes at me.

“I promised we would protect you, that no one would ever do that to you again.”

I looked down at the way his hair barely brushed against the collar of his shirt, and how his stubble was starting to show. “Yeah, you did.”

I heard footsteps, and peeked over Nyx’s shoulder to see Lykos approaching too, looking distraught. He plopped down beside us, and tugged me into his lap, making Nyx huff. “I promised too, Mel. No one in this pack wants to hurt you. And even if that ever changed, we wouldn’t let him. Our wolves wouldn’t even let us hurt you.”

“Why not?” I didn’t understand wolf culture enough to fully trust a few dogs.

Lykos pushed my hair out of my face and lightly caressed my neck. “Because everything we do is driven by our instincts.
